Brian gets some parental training.

It's Saturday. David and Bert are silaging at Brookfield and Ruth makes a picnic for everyone. They chat about Phil's bird watching for the churchyard survey. Phil's so keen, according to Jill, that he's keeping a notebook by him in the conservatory. Bert hints about some gossip he's heard from Eddie and says that Mike should be a bit cautious around Lilian. When David asks what he means, Bert won't disclose anything.

Brian and Ruairi tell an increasingly weak Siobhan about their trip to the zoo. When Siobhan hears that Brian bought Ruairi some treats she asks him not to spoil Ruairi too much - he's not used to getting everything he wants. Brian talks to Ruairi about Home Farm, but Ruairi can't remember who Jennifer is when she's mentioned.

Siobhan's visited by her old school friend Claire and is upset when Claire spends the whole visit in tears. Later Siobhan tells Brian that it's time he went back to Ambridge - she has to know if Jennifer will accept Ruairi. When Brian says he wants to stay to look after her, Siobhan tells him the best thing he can do is let her know that Ruairi has got a secure future. They say an emotional goodbye.
