Mumford & Sons: The 6 stages of making Wilder Mind
Ben Lovett and Winston Marshall speak to Steve Lamacq about Mumford & Sons' third studio album, Wilder Mind.
1) Feeling braver

Mumford & Sons interview
Steve has an in depth chat with Mumford and Sons about their latest album 'Wilder Mind'.
"We weren’t anywhere in the public eye in the making of it… So it gives you the confidence to lay it out there and be brutally honest."
2) Discovering electric guitars

"We get excited about new instruments! It feels weird to say we discovered electric guitars but Marcus and I went and bought a couple of guitars, there are some new gadgets and synthy stuff. We just wanted to play new things." - Winston
3) 6 is the magic number

"At one point we had 40 songs, producer James Ford said, 'I think you’ve got six good ones and I can throw an album together with the leftovers.' We took that positively - Six good ones!"
4) Less layering

Mumford & Sons - The Wolf
Mumford & Sons perform The Wolf on Later... with Jools Holland.
"There’s much less on The Wolf than on old material in terms of layers of instrumentation. James helped us understand you can make big, impactful music without necessarily having to throw in the kitchen sink."
5) Talking it out

"We’re really bad at communicating; we never have sit down talks about our music. We’re kind of weirdly awkward about it."
6) Playing live

"What was striking for me was that when we started playing these club shows again is I really miss playing live. If you’ve got a gig it gives so much purpose to your day."
