Soundtrack is music to the ears of Well Done U judges

A humorous look at an interruption to the monotony of work life has won BBC Radio 5 Live's Well Done U short film competition. The two-minute film 'Soundtrack', co written and directed by John Gillespie and Patrick Hughes, was revealed as the winner by presenter Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo in front of a 600-strong audience at London's Empire cinema.

It was the culmination of the competition launched on BBC Radio 5 live in the summer to give budding film-makers the chance to get their original work shown to a cinema audience and receive a British Board of Film Classification 'U' certificate.

Soundtrack celebrates the oddballs and the optimists, presenting a cautionary tale against living life without joy. Winner John Gillespie, 25, from Glasgow was both shocked and elated at picking up the top spot.

“I’ve always loved film, I studied film at University and I’ve always wanted to make films, so this is such a giant push to do more of it. Having gone through the process from start to finish and getting the recognition like this it’s more than we ever thought,” he said.

Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs, who presented the award and BBFC U certificate to the winner, said: “These entries are two minutes long and are utterly fantastic. There’s no reason for anyone to not try and make their own stuff and start reaching audiences.”

The awards were judged by radio presenter Simon Mayo, film reviewer Mark Kermode and Belle director Amma Asante.

“What I loved about Soundtrack the winner was that it was witty, clever, bold, and told its story in the short amount of time that was allocated, it was brilliant,” Asante said.

Animation Blip and Blob, a tale of friendship and forgiveness, was runner-up while the heroic struggle of beetle Bob was placed third.

“If each one of the final three short films were shown before a big feature they would not be embarrassed. They are really charming and beautifully done,” Mayo said.

Well Done U was supported by BBC Arts’ Get Creative campaign to get more people than ever before participating in the arts. Champions Into Film made available guides on how to get the best out of home-movie making.

Film reviewer and Well Done U judge Mark Kermode said it was fascinating to see how often the concept of memory featured in the submitted entries.

What you'll be astonished by is the quality of the film-making from beautiful live action shots to really cleverly constructed animation

Of the films on the shortlist, he said: “Some of them are funny, some of them are heart-breaking and some adventurously strange.”

“I would encourage anyone to look at these ten movies. What you'll be astonished by is the quality of the film-making from beautiful live action shots to really cleverly constructed animation," he said.

He also highlighted the films' clever use of sound, in particular music and 'in the space of two minutes how a film can take you on a time travelling journey'.

Belle director Amma Asante joined Kermode and Mayo to judge the competition, which was open to amateur film-makers aged 13 and upwards.

“We’ve been generally bowled over and speaking to Amma about it she has said the same thing, she was genuinely taken aback. It was genuinely very hard to whittle down the list,” Kermode said.
