About BBC Young Composer

BBC Young Composer provides opportunities and resources for 12 to 18 year olds across the UK who create their own original music.

If you are a teacher or work with adolescents through music, you can sign up this online webform to receive news and updates surrounding BBC Young Composer.

What personal data will BBC collect and how will we use it?

The BBC will collect and process the personal data you have provided to us via the online webform to sign you up to the BBC Young Composer mailing list.

Personal data:
You must be 18 years or older to sign. The BBC will collect and process the following personal data about you:

  • Your first and last name
  • Your email address
  • Name of the school/organisation where you work
  • The phase of education your school/organisation covers (Primary, Secondary, etc.)
  • The school/organisation’s post code
  • UK Region that your school/organisation belongs to

We will use your personal data to:

  • Send you promotional and marketing information via emails. These types of communications include informing you of events, news and updates about the BBC Young Composer project.
  • Track the emails we send, record when an email is opened, and which links are clicked to monitor the effectiveness of our communications, analyse our marketing performance and improve our service. The data from this tracking is generally used in an aggregated and anonymised form.
  • Analyse our marketing performance to improve our services, for example, to reach wider audiences. If we do so, we will make sure that you won’t be individually identified by this information.
  • Interact with you, as well as dealing with any questions or complaints that you raise.

Who is the Data Controller?

The BBC is the “data controller” of your personal data. This means that the BBC decides what your personal data is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of doubt, your personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. Lawful basis for processing your personal data

Our legal basis on which the BBC processes your personal data is the performance of its public task. The BBC’s role is to act in the public interest and to serve all audiences with content which informs, educates, and entertains. This is consistent with the BBC’s wider public purposes under its Royal Charter, which states that the BBC “should provide specialist educational content to help support learning for children and teenagers across the United Kingdom. It should encourage people to explore new subjects and participate in new activities through partnerships with educational, sporting and cultural institutions.”

Sharing your personal data

The BBC works with approved suppliers who help us to provide some of our services. These data processors only use your personal data on behalf of the BBC and not independently of the BBC. We use a third-party to store the data collected through our online platform and deliver the newsletters to you.

We may also share personal data with a third party where required or permitted by law.

Retaining your personal data

We will hold your personal data for as long as you are actively engaging with our newsletters. If you remain inactive by not opening our email for two years, your personal data will be deleted.

You can unsubscribe from emails at any time by using the link at the foot of our emails or by contacting young.composer@bbc.co.uk

If you choose to opt out/unsubscribe, your details will be deleted within 10 days of the email being sent.

Your personal data will be stored within the UK and the EEA.

Your rights and more information

You have rights under data protection law.

You can requestacopy of the personal data BBC stores about you.

You have the right to ask for the personal data we collect about you to be deleted however there are limitations and exceptions to this right which may entitle the BBC to refuse your request.

In certain circumstances, you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data or to object to the processing of your personal data.

You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data to you or to another organisation, in certain circumstances.
