Wedding cake is a superhero in disguise

They say one of the foundations of a solid marriage is compromise and one couple displayed this even before they had walked down the aisle, starting with their wedding cake. The bride wanted a traditional tiered cake, the groom wanted his love of superheroes reflected - and pictures of the end result have gone viral on social media.

Bedfordshire couple Kia and Billy Bunning commissioned a cake with a surprise. Like all good superheroes, the costume was hidden underneath a deceiving exterior.

A Marvel-lous wedding cake

The couple are both fans of superhero films, and wanted that incorporated into their special day.

“We didn’t want it to look like a kid’s party, we just wanted subtle touches like adding characters to the place settings, the seating plan and somehow into the cake,” says bride Kia.

But they still wanted the cake to have a traditional feel. They approached Milton Keynes based wedding cake maker Julia Baker of Tier by Tier cakes with the challenge.

“Kia and Billy drew up a rough design for the Marvel and Batman,” says Julia, “Kia wanted an all-white four tier cake with cascading sugar flowers top to bottom and Billy wanted his favourite Marvel and Batman logo’s on the back revealed by the icing curtains.”

They didn’t actually see the finished wedding cake until the day before the ceremony.

The newlyweds had already used Julia for their son’s first birthday cake and had seen one of her wedding cakes at a friend’s reception the previous year.

When Kia arrived at the reception venue she was asked if she’d like to see the room but the first thing she asked was to see they cake. And she was not disappointed.

The chocolate and vanilla sponge cake was cut in front of their guests in the evening, many of which were unaware of the superhero disguised within until photos started to appear on social media.

The cake took roughly forty hours to make. Cake-maker Julia says it was hard work, having to juggle another wedding cake for the day after and looking after her two girls but “loved every minute making it as I knew it would be something that people would be surprised at and appeal to all the Marvel fans.”

The newly-married Mr and Mrs Bunning were pleased to see photos of their wedding cake being shared on social media and Julia has been surprised at how popular it’s been and all the positive feedback she has since received.

The groom had originally suggested a Tottenham-theme cake but they agreed on the superhero reveal instead.
