16 amazing events you can stream at the WOWxBBC Festival

We are teaming up with The WOW Foundation to bring you a fantastic weekend of live events celebrating women and girls, and looking at obstacles they face. Below is a full list of the inspiring figures you can watch on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May. (Timings subject to change, please check back for updates).

Sunday 9am: Morning Stretch Live with Nia Ceidiog

Join yoga instructor Nia Ceidiog for a stretch to start your day.

Connect your mind and your body, and get ready for the day. Wear loose clothing - and no equipment or experience needed.

Sunday 10am: Views on the News

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi and Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff

On Sunday morning at 10am Jude Kelly was joined by guests, former Conservative cabinet minister Baroness Warsi and journalist Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff, for a morning news review with a difference.

As the pandemic continues to dominate the news, they discuss the gender issues that are revealed or buried in its reporting, and look for the hope that can be found in these tough times.

Sunday 11.30am: Rebecca Solnit in conversation

As our lives remain upended by the Covid-19 pandemic, writer Rebecca Solnit and Jude Kelly discuss the positive change that is possible when the status quo is shattered.

Sunday 2pm: WOW Big Ideas (Sunday)

Three women present big ideas for big change, hosted by journalist, broadcaster and documentary maker Kieran Yates.

  • Professor Devi Sridhar discusses STEM role models and how to encourage women and girls to take up leadership positions
  • Jumoke Abdullahi and Kym Oliver on the importance of being seen and heard, and what it means to be Black disabled women in the world today
  • Helena Kennedy QC discusses women, civil liberties, and why and how we must protect our human rights in times of crisis

Sunday 3.30pm: Bringing up boys

Karen Blackett and Nihal Arthanayake

On Sunday at 3.30pm Jude Kelly is talking about raising sons, with advertising boss Karen Blackett and BBC Radio 5 Live's Nihal Arthanayake. Is there a right way to bring up boys? Are we giving boys the tools they need to contribute to a gender-equal world? And how can we encourage them to identify damaging, learned behaviours without harming their self-esteem?

Sunday 5pm: Sandi Toksvig’s Women from History

Did you know that Florence Nightingale was described by soldiers not as "the lady with the lamp", but "the lady with the hammer": a force to be reckoned with when defending the medical supply cabinet, she was a statistician, writer, social reformer and the founder of modern nursing.

Sandi Toksvig tells you a little bit more than you probably know already about the women behind the history of medicine - with special guests Maxine Peake and Emma Dabiri.

Sunday 6.15pm: The Great Big WOW Quiz

It wouldn't be a virtual event without a quiz! We've enlisted some amazing quiz mistresses to help round the weekend off in style:

  • QI presenter Sandi Toksvig brings us the Great Big Lady-Lockdown History Quiz
  • Silent Witness star Liz Carr hosts a round of Trivial Her-suit *Not a quiz about hairy women
  • Space scientist Maggie Aderin Pocock is Putting the Fem into STEM with her Science Quiz

Sunday 7.30pm: Yoga Wind Down

And finally, to round off the weekend in a relaxing way, slip into Sunday evening with a calm feeling as Sanchia Legister runs this gentle and meditative session.

Saturday 9am: Morning Stretch Live with Asma Elbadawi

Join basketballer Asma Elbadawi to stretch out and get ready for the day.

Asma is a superstar “Queen of the Ball”, who recently successfully lobbied the International Basketball Association to remove a ban on hijabs and religious headwear in the professional sport.

Wear loose clothing - no equipment or experience is needed!

Saturday 10am: Women, Leadership and Progress

At 10am on Saturday, Jude Kelly, founder of Women of the World, was in conversation with Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia, about the impact of Covid-19 on women and girls. They also considered whether women’s leadership is able to bring fresh approaches to the economic and social challenges we face.

In addition there were contributions from environmental activist Hindou Ibrahim, on the changes she wants to see both for the world’s indigenous people and for everything on the planet, and from writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch, who discussed how the power disadvantages of race, class and gender have been ruthlessly exposed during the current emergency.

Saturday 11.30am: Chore Wars

At 11.30am Jude Kelly spoke to Hannah Peaker, the Women's Equality Party's Chief of Staff, and writer and performer Angie Le Mar about how lockdown is affecting women domestically. Why do some women feel as if it is a return to how things were in the 1950s?

Also featured contributions from writer and journalist Saima Mir and Hela Boujnah.

Saturday 1pm: Women and Money in Covid-19

Jude Kelly will be joined by Kirsty Good, Head of Campaigns at MoneySavingExpert, and Teresa Reynolds, founder of Incredible Brilliant Youth, to discuss the many ways that Covid-19 is affecting women’s personal finance, why knowing your stuff - particularly now - is so important, and where you can get good financial information.

Saturday 2pm: How to do your hair in lockdown

There were two special live workshops on doing your your hair in lockdown.

First up was Grace Gebbie from Sister Joan Salon in Margate. For Caucasian hair types, Grace took us through how to give yourself a successful home-trim and put a quick and fun colour through your hair.

She was followed by natural hair stylist Ebuni Ajiduah, who ran a workshop for Afro hair types, with her top do’s and don’ts for fabulous hair.

Saturday 3.30pm: WOW Big Ideas (Saturday)

Gemma Cairney presents The Leisure Society on BBC Radio 6 Music

Two women shared their big ideas for big change with host Gemma Cairney. Sex Educator Ruby Rare spoke on orgasm inequality and activist Tea Uglow revealed who her LGBTQIA+ heroes are.

Saturday 4.45pm: Fixing the Glitch - Making the Web Work for Women

On Saturday at 4.30pm Jude Kelly focused on the digital world with Seyi Akiwowo, Founder and Executive Director of Glitch, a young not-for-profit organisation working to end online abuse. World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee said that the internet is "not working for women and girls" - why is that and what can be done to change it?

Saturday 6pm: Daily Wrap Up with Jude Kelly

Jude Kelly was joined by Nusrath Hassan and Suzanne Jacob, CEO of domestic abuse charity SafeLives, to round up the day and discuss some of the themes that emerged - and to look ahead to what is in store for Sunday.
