5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 2nd March
Every day we play you a track that has just grabbed our attention. As soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist and, at other times, it'll be someone brand new. Here's this week's choice selection. Francobollo – Hoo Ha
Francobollo are back with their first new material since their debut album Long Live Life was released back in 2017. It’s a lovely little slice of indie pop – and if you can hear traces of alt-J and Marika Hackman it’s probably because Francobollo headed into the studio with their producer, Charlie Andrew. The band are now writing and recording their new material for a new project, with a release pencilled in for later this year.
Girl Ray – The Way We Came Back
We’re big fans of Girl Ray on the show – so when we heard that they were back with new music we had to give the track its first spin on the radio. Ridiculously, this track was written by band member Poppy when she was just 16 years old – and the band kept it back until now to share it with the world. It’s safe to say we’ll be filing this track in our ‘scarily talented young musicians’ playlist.
Paul White & Shungudzo – Spare Gold
Paul’s new album is on the way – it’s arriving on the 27th April, to be precise - and it’s going to be called Rejuvenate. For his return, he’s teamed up with Zimbabwean musician, songwriter and poet Shungudzo to create ‘Spare Gold’ – and it’s part-Jill Scott, part-SBTRKT and 100% amazing. If you were a fan of the last albums from Sampha and Solange, then this will definitely be right up your musical street.
Laura Veirs & Sufjan Stevens – Watch Fire
Laura’s back with the next single from her tenth studio album, and it’s a delightful winter warmer of a record, perfect for the sub-zero temperatures . It’s lovely to hear Sufjan’s voice again, so soon after his beautiful contributions to last year’s Call Me By Your Name soundtrack. If you like the sound of this, Laura’s new album is coming out next month (13th April) on Bella Union.
DJ Koze – Illumination (feat. Roisin Murphy)
If you need a weekend anthem to soundtrack your big night out, or just your futile attempts to battle through the snow, then this is the record for you! It’s a dancefloor meeting of minds, with Hamburg’s DJ Koze teaming up with one of Ireland’s most instantly-recognisable dance vocalists. If you need something to warm you up, we prescribe one portion of dancing around the kitchen to this absolute corker of a tune.
