Philip Roth, the American writer who moved from enfant terrible to grand old man of American letters, died on 22 May at the age of 85. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author grew up in Newark, New Jersey, and first made his name with the novels Goodbye, Columbus and Portnoy's Complaint.
