Pothole Advice

On the programme on 10th November 2025, Rip Off Britain reported how the pothole plague continues to spread across the UK.

In HQ, personal finance expert Amy Knight advised on what to do if a pothole damages your car.

  • Check if the pothole has been previously reported. If it has not been reported, be the one to report it online to the local council via their direct website.
  • Collect evidence. Do this safely when the road is quiet. Take pictures of the pothole and take pictures of the damage to your car. Save all the invoices and receipts for any costs that you've incurred.
  • Use www.fixmystreet.com where you put in the postcode of where the pothole is, and it can help you find out which organisation you need to refer a claim to. It can also show you which other road defects have been reported already on that postcode.
  • Check your insurance policy documents to see if you are covered for pothole damage. If you live in an area where potholes are particularly rife then look at taking out a fully comprehensive policy which includes pothole damage.
