BBC Fresh Profile: Malik Roberts

Filmmaker Malik Roberts explains the thinking behind his film.

Malik believes body image is a topic with wide appeal and says he found inspiration close to home.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

I think it's a subject that's universal. Everyone suffers from hang-ups about their body, even if it's just from time to time, so it's a subject matter that most can relate to.

What motivated you to make this film?

The idea behind IMG is one that's quite close to home, and my girlfriend really pushed me to make a film about it. So I guess the answer is... my girlfriend!

What camera did you use to shoot your film?

It was all shot on a Canon 5D MK III.

Who/what inspires you?

David Lynch, Steve McQueen, Kenneth Anger and Jan Svankmajer are just a few of my influences. I'm also a big fan of trying to find inspiration in abstract things, such as colours, music and dreams.

What are your plans for the future?

To keep making films! I've met loads of really amazing filmmakers and actors, and I'd love to keep working with them.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

Definitely how important it is to collaborate! Filmmaking is all about collaboration. If you're not collaborating then you're missing a trick!
