Director's notes from episode two

Adrian Shergold explains how the fight on the boat was filmed
The scenes on the boat were shot over a couple days. It was cold, windy and wet. We had safety boats, wet suits, divers and back-up boats for crew who couldn't be on the hero boat but were all close by. The actors were in life jackets right up until the camera turned over.
The fight on the boat had been worked out the night before on boats that were tied up to the jetty. All the story had been shot before Davey is hit and falls into the water. You could feel the tension building, the only actors who seem unconcerned were our two youngest Francis (Michael Nevin) and Seamie (Isaac Heslip) - they were just excited.
We were all hoping we could do this in one take. If we didn't get it and with the light going, I knew it would take over an hour to reset, if not more. So we had to go for it and shoot - action! Cameras running. It all went smoothly, the fight went perfectly. Davey hit the water, Prince dived in to save him - it went better than I could've hoped for. I shouted 'cut' and the actors were pulled to safety.
There was still only one thing that hadn't been filmed. Davey hadn't finished all the dialogue. I asked him if he was ok - 'yes' he said ...."sorry I couldn't finish my dialogue". "What was the problem?' I asked. He replied "the water, it was so cold it took all my breath away - I couldn't speak..."!

Davey gets into a spot of bother with Prince
After an altercation on the boat about fishing for eels, Davey ends up in the lough.
