Remember when the UK's Eurovision entries were chart hits?

Part of Eurovision's charm is the UK's often questionable entries. 2018's entry, Storm by SuRie only reached just No.50.

It hasn't always been that way though. There have been plenty of British entries that are bona-fide classics, achieving success in the contest and in the charts.

1976: Brotherhood of Man - "Save Your Kisses for Me"

Let's start with the biggest hit of all the UK's Eurovision entries.

According to the Official Charts Company "Save Your Kisses for Me" is the only Eurovision song to sell over a million copies.

Brotherhood of Man won the 21st Eurovision Song Contest for the UK in the Netherlands. They spent six weeks in the number 1 spot at the top of the charts in 1976 thanks to this track.

1967: Sandie Shaw - "Puppet On A String"

Brotherhood of Man weren't the UK's first winners though. That honour goes to Sandie Shaw. She won it for the UK in Vienna the day after her 20th birthday.

"Puppet on a String" was also the first Eurovision song to top the charts - it held onto that spot for three weeks!

Sandie has been making hits since she was 17 - she had her first number 1 in 1964.

1968: Cliff Richard - "Congratulations"

In 1967 Sandie Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest for the UK with "Puppet On A String".

It was written by Phil Coulter and Bill Martin, and it looked like their entry for 1968 - Cliff Richard's "Congratulations" - would win as well.

The song was in the lead right up until the penultimate vote when Germany gave Spain six points.

Spain's entry beat Cliff by one point, but "Congratulations" went on to be a huge hit across Europe.

1996: Gina G - "Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit"

It may have finished 8th in Ireland in 1996 but Gina G's "Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit" topped the charts in the UK and became a school disco favourite for years to come.

Gina G followed it up with another four top 40 hits.

1992: Our very own Michael Ball!

How could we not mention Radio 2's very own Michael Ball? He took the UK to an impressive second place in Sweden with "One Step Out Of Time".
