Gregathlon: Pedal to the Peaks 2018 for Sport Relief - How Greg James Raised £1 Million

Gregathlon: Pedal to the Peaks saw Greg James battling freezing conditions, cycling hundreds of miles and climbing up the UK's highest mountains in aid of Sport Relief.

He managed to raise over 1 MILLION POUNDS for Sport Relief, all thanks to the kindness and generosity of Radio 1 listeners.

His challenge saw him take on the Beast From the East, and after bravely battling for four days, day five saw him forced to postpone progress. But he triumphantly returned two weeks later to finish the job by scaling Ben Nevis! Find out how he fared below.

Greg has done an incredible job raising awareness for mental health around the UK. You can still support him and donate (see terms and conditions).

DAY SEVEN

Route: Climb Ben Nevis.

The Final Day - Radio 1's Gregathlon for Sport Relief

Greg has climbed Snowdon, cycled to Scafell Pike and cycled to Ben Nevis.

Before taking on the unenviable task of climbing the UK's highest peak, Greg received a musical message...

...and keeps on climbing...

It wasn't quite the thick snow that saw the Gregathlon postponed, but with heavy rain on the way Greg DEFINITELY needed some encouragement...

“At one point a boat overtook me, I thought I was hallucinating!”

DAY FIVE - Greg Returns!

Day 1 - Radio 1's Gregathlon for Sport Relief Part 2

Greg is back. Ben Nevis, you're going down!

"One of the reasons why I want to keep going is because people were really invested in the story and they loved that we were talking about mental health awareness. That is why I wanted to get back here, finish the job off properly and keep the conversation going."

The Gregathlon is back on!

Greg has been given the green light to continue. Ben Nevis, you're going down.

After his epic Gregathlon challenge ground to a halt in the deep snow, Greg was itching to get back onto his bike and make it to Ben Nevis.

Now that the weather has settled, he has returned to Moffat in Scotland to finish what he started. He'll begin Part Two of Gregathlon: Pedal to the Peaks at 4pm today (Wednesday 14th March).

Standing in the same same spot he was forced to call off Part One of the challenge, he told Nick Grimshaw: "I'm feeling recovered, my body is better... I feel even more determined than I was the first time to get it done and keep shouting about the message we've been shouting about the last couple of weeks."

After today's show, he'll cycle into the night and all day Thursday, before climbing the UK's highest peak.

DAY 4

Unfortunately, Greg James has been advised by his team and Sport Relief that conditions are not safe enough for the challenge to continue.

Despite heroically reaching the top of Mount Snowdon and Scafell Pike, he won't be climbing to the top of Ben Nevis.

"We can't continue this challenge... at the moment," Greg told Adele Roberts on Radio 1. "That is it for today and that is it for the challenge for this week. That means that we can't continue to Ben Nevis. We literally can't leave here. We can't get there. [But] I'm going to come back and do that mountain."

Greg is absolutely gutted to have his challenge stopped. Thanks to the support of Radio 1 listeners, he has done an incredible job of raising awareness for mental health round the UK, and has raised a huge amount of donations for Sport Relief in the process.

See below for Greg's incredible progress throughout the challenge, before conditions prevented him from going any further.

Greg says the aim of the challenge was to raise more awareness about mental health, and he believes it's kickstarted a wider conversation. "It's more than the bike ride now. We're talking about these things really openly. I've been completely in awe of how everyone's dealt with it. There's so many different ways of talking about mental health issues. Let's just keep it going. It was always meant to be five days of nonsense, and then the conversation keeps going."

When Greg broke the news...

"I'm trying to get my head around it that we can't get back on the bikes" - Day Four Gregathlon Update

Despite a heroic effort so far, Greg has been advised not to continue.

DAY 3

Route: Climbing England's tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, before cycling 100+ miles to his show

“I feel really, really broken” – Gregathlon: Pedal To The Peaks Day Three Update

Greg James checks in with Scott Mills to let the nation know how he’s getting on.

How on earth did he manage it? "That was the most ridiculous thing I've ever had to do," he told Scott Mills. "I feel really, really broken." In these torrential conditions, he really has done an incredible job.

Just look at these heroes: Greg and his team of trusty experts.
He made it!

After climbing back down Scafell Pike, Greg recieved some great news about the latest Sport Relief total

Greg gets the latest Sport Relief donation update mid-Snowmageddon

“There are moments when you scream out loud I CAN’T MOVE!”

Over £200,000 has already been raised, which is amazing! Speaking to Adele Roberts, Greg was candid in saying his latest peak was the toughest to conquer. His legs were giving way, he could barely see a thing. "There are moments when you scream out loud, 'I CAN’T MOVE!'"

After Greg climbed Scafell Pike, his dad showed up to give his congratulations. So much love!

Never underestimate the Beast from the East

The last few laps of day three saw snowy conditions taking over. Greg had to follow instructions not to cycle on icy terrain, so the team headed out looking for a safe area to continue their route.

But at the time of going on the Annie Mac show, Greg was given a total of over £270,000. INCREDIBLE.

DAY 2

Route: Cycling 100+ miles from Wales to the Lake District

Day 2 - BBC Radio 1's Gregathlon for Sport Relief

After climbing Mount Snowdon, Greg cycles over 100 miles to his next destination.

Back on the road! Easy does it...

Day two is when exhaustion set in for Greg. He confessed to feeling shattered on Scott Mills' show

"I'm just knackered," Greg said. "A little bit fed up of it, for sure. But this was always going to be the problem. It's just miles and miles and miles. It's just a really ambitious challenge and it's constantly changing because of the weather. There's so many things which could go wrong."

All the more reason to support Greg and donate. See our terms and conditions here.

Also, shout up to the guy who pulled down his car window and handed Greg £40 when he cycled past!

Greg grabs a peanut butter sandwich for some much needed sustenance.
Gregathlon's most difficult stretch so far? Hundreds of miles in a pelting blizzard. Everyone's donations are keeping him going, though. After chatting on Adele Roberts' show, Greg was given the latest total: £74,000!

England cricketer Jimmy Anderson phoned in to offer some much-needed support

Greg arrived for his show in Lake Windermere at 6.50pm, ten minutes before the end. It had been a ridiculously tough day - because of the snow, he was forced to switch from a road bike to a mountain bike. Better for taking on the snowy conditions, but it slowed him down. Still, he managed to get there just in time. And he was given the latest donations total: a gigantic £127,534!
Greg receives physio treatment at the end of day two. Sheer, excruciating pain.
There's nothing quite like enjoying a pizza in an ice bath. Let's face it, Greg deserved more than a few slices.

DAY 1

Route: Climbing Mount Snowdon before cycling 80 miles between his show and Daresbury

Day 1 - BBC Radio 1's Gregathlon for Sport Relief - With Connor from The Vamps

Greg is joined by Connor from the Vamps on the climb up to the top of Snowdon.

Check out our round-up of Gregathlon: Pedal to the Peaks for Sport Relief day one above, and a selection of standout moments below.

Before setting off, Greg phoned Nick Grimshaw for a quick status update. Anyone got 4G?
Limber up... Let's go!!
For a bit of extra moral support, Connor from The Vamps was there to climb the first few peaks with Greg. Connor is particularly open about his mental health, and he says it's important to have a close support network. "Open up a little bit if you can, I know it's hard to say that. But once you make that first step everything gets easier."
Now for the (really, really) difficult part. Climbing gear at the ready!

A couple of hours later, he reached the Snowdon summit!

Life at the top feels pretty amazing. Except for the -15 Arctic winds, obviously.
What goes up must come down. Greg took his first tumble on the route back. After this, he had to cycle 80 miles to meet Adele Roberts for his 4pm show.

After the climb, it was a race against time to his show in Denbigh

He showed up a little late for his show (understandable, really), but Greg was given a hero's welcome by students of Myddleton College.

And when the day was finished, Greg was given his own song by Touching Sloth
