BBC Fresh Profile: Philip Coleman

Philip Coleman explains his highly personal film.

Philip explores his own anxiety attacks in his film, which employs a distinctive style made up of static monochrome images.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

Anxiety, and specifically anxiety attacks, have been a major problem for me for almost all of my adult life. So I decided to make a film that would be intriguing visually, and explain in as best a way as possible how anxiety can make life difficult.

What motivated you to make this film?

There has never been anything in the media on this topic, that I have seen, that I could relate to. Making this film was my way of trying to come to terms with the issues I had surrounding anxiety, and hopefully giving other people with similar issues something to relate to.

What camera did you use to shoot your film?

Most of this film was shot on a Canon 5D MKIII. Some shots were done on a Canon 600D.

Who/what inspires you?

I don't usually go down the documentary route as a filmmaker. My inspiration for fictional filmmaking mostly comes from science fiction, fantasy and mystery. This would include the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy by Edgar Wright, the Nick Hornby book/film High Fidelity and the TV series Firefly. However, I do really enjoy Werner Herzog's work, and Louis Theroux.

What are your plans for the future?

Continue doing photography and filmmaking work, hopefully find some work in TV or film. Here's hoping! Mostly, I want to tell stories, either documentary or fiction, that are important to me.
