Five of the most outrageous new weapons in Robot Wars
CAUTION: not suitable for letting loose in your lounge.
Aftershock
Weapon: Vertical Spinner

Aftershock is a brand new robot from the team who got to last year’s final with Shockwave. The power of their weapon is close to that of Matilda’s spinning blade and the angled armour will deflect heavy spinners like Carbide. The vertical spinner works differently to a horizontal one – the arena floor takes the impact so Aftershock can stay on the attack rather than being catapulted away by the force of the impact.
Aftershock vital stats
| Attribute | Value / notes |
|---|---|
| Weight | 110kg |
| Defence | The majority of the chassis is 6mm hardened steel with 15mm hardened steel bulkheads, the top panels will be 12mm polycarbonate |
| Top speed | 13mph |
| Drive system | 2 x brushed motors |
| Power | Electric |
| Battery | Lithium polymer 10AH |
| Biggest weakness | Flippers could be an issue and could throw Aftershock out of the arena. Aftershock has no self-righting mechanism and Matilda’s spinner could be a threat |
Coyote
Weapon: Clamp & Lift Grabber

Coyote is a dual-weapon, invertible machine with a steampunk style and orange LEDs as the eyes. It has electrically actuated, gnarling jaws rated between 750 and 1,000 kilograms. The front jaws are made from ten-millimetre-thick wear plate steel and its outstanding strength can lift each of the team members. The actuated chainsaw tail can spin at 3,000 revolutions per minute, making an intense screeching sound and slicing up wheels.
| Attribute | Value / notes |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100kg |
| Defence | Steel and High-density polyethylene |
| Top speed | 15mph |
| Drive system | Two-wheeled drive, 2750w brushless out-runners |
| Power | Electric |
| Battery | Lithium-Polymer, 22.2v |
| Biggest weakness | The machine is untested in battle and the chainsaw could be prone to separating from the robot |
Ms Nightshade
Weapon: Spikes

Ms Nightshade is new to the Robot Wars scene and has been built and designed by a female engineering team to be a unique spinning robot. This will be the first time in the arena for the team who have designed one of the tallest robots in the competition. The six petals with spikes surround the body which acts as a hammer. Ms Nightshade is designed not to destroy their competitors but to survive and has the ability to climb out of the pit.
| Attribute | Value / notes |
|---|---|
| Weight | 100kg |
| Defence | A mild steel shell on the inside of the petals to protect the main components when the petals are fully expanded |
| Top speed | Unknown |
| Drive system | An internally communicated brush motor will be used to drive the wheels of the two wheelchair motors |
| Power | Electric and Pneumatic |
| Battery | Two lead acid 12 volt batteries |
| Biggest weakness | This is a new robot that is untested and it cannot cause a massive amount of damage |
Jellyfish
Weapon: Clamp

Jellyfish is a clamp robot designed to be built and fixed using only the most rudimentary tools, whilst remaining competitive. At 17centimetres tall, it is the flattest robot in the competition. Its weapon is a 120 centimetres wide clamping device which runs the entire of the body, allowing it to manoeuvre opponents into hazards.
| Attribute | Value / notes |
|---|---|
| Weight | 85kg |
| Defence | High density polyethylene which ranges from 20 to100mm thick |
| Top speed | 15mph |
| Drive system | Two E30-400-G Ampflow motors |
| Power | Electric |
| Battery | Lead acid batteries wired in series for 24v |
| Biggest weakness | The robot has an enormous surface arena making it very easy to hit |
Apex
Weapon: Spinner

Apex is an overhead bar spinner, using an axial gap DC brushed motor to drive the bar through a pulley system. It uses a 2,000-amp capacity contractor to switch on the weapon motor, which in turn activates via a relay switch. The weapon is a 120cm long 1” thick hardened steel bar spinning at 1,750 revolutions per minute and using a motor at 58.8 volts. It has a top speed of 242 miles per hour. The total weight of the bar and the pulley is 37 kilograms with a separate pulley on the motor which weighs approximately 1.5 kilograms. The body of the robot has been designed to look menacing and has large, sharp spikes at the front and sides.
| Attribute | Value / notes |
|---|---|
| Weight | 108Kg |
| Defence | Hardened steel of various thicknesses, the front of the robot is protected by 8mm, the flat sides have two plates of 10mm, the sloped sides are four millimetres, the rear end protecting the motor is 6mm and all the remaining hardened steel is 4mm |
| Top speed | 18mph |
| Drive system | Drive is a two-wheel drive system on a five to one gear ratio. Wheels are 6 inches in diameter using two ampflow e30-400 motors giving a top speed of approximately 18mph |
| Power | Electric |
| Battery | Two 6s 2.65ah batteries for drive, four 7s 5ah batteries wired to give 58.8V on the weapon |
| Biggest weakness | The robot’s weapon system is completely untested and will be started for the first time in the arena |
