Fact-Checking on Social Media

On 11th November 2025, Rip Off Britain reported that social media companies were scrapping the use of third-party fact checking companies, in favour of a community-note system.

In HQ, Tony Thompson from fact-checking company Full Fact, gave his top tips on how to verify content people see online:
Take time before you share something on social media or online:

  • See whether it's been published elsewhere on trusted sources
  • Look at the comments and whether anybody else is questioning it the same way that you are.
  • Check whether the URL that it leads to is actually a legitimate website or if it has been faked or duplicated
  • Take the time to think about whether or not this is a genuine piece of footage or whether it's likely to be what it says it is.
