Selfie: A Snapshot of Scandal

23 October 2014

Youthful decadence, excess and disposable images are central to the National Youth Theatre’s Selfie, which remixes Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray with contemporary hipster culture.

The term selfie is now so ubiquitous it has already found its way into both the OED and the Scrabble lexicon. Here, it establishes self-obsession as key, as the play asks what does it take to stay beautiful.

The NYT's rep company of 18-25 year-olds worked with writer Brad Birch to develop Selfie, setting the action in the near future and using all the tools of modern technology. Directed by Paul Roseby, the production at the Ambassadors Theatre casts Kate Kennedy as Dorian Gray - the young woman with the selfie in the attic.
