BBC Fresh Profile: Ed Chappell

Ed Chappell describes his filmmaking inspirations.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

I decided to approach the subject from a youthful perspective. I thought it would be interesting to give a small insight into a good friend's dream, in an upbeat way - just a few minutes to escape and appreciate another's ambitions.

What motivated you to make this film?

I've always loved documentary. I'm 19, so in a way I feel my take on the world could be seen as different from an older filmmaker. Ultimately, I wanted to showcase a friend's interest to the viewer.

What camera did you use to shoot your film?

Sony NEX 5K compact DSLR and Rode microphone.

Who/what inspires you?

I feel like I gather inspiration from all over the place. It's not a case of one or two films inspiring me. I suppose when I'm making a film I'm remembering certain parts from everything and using it to give me some ideas. Any documentary which looks at normal lives and a person's interest really inspire me.

What are your plans for the future?

I'm in my first year at Kingston uni, studying filmmaking. I'd love to get into the industry and keep improving by practising making films!

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

I can't think of anything that isn't really stereotypical, but from what I've learnt, opinion is everything. One person might massively criticise your work, but another may love it. Don't lose confidence over an opinion.
