5 songs you should hear this week - w/e 23rd March
Every day we play you a track that has just grabbed our attention. As soon as we hear it, we send it into the digital ether for you all to enjoy. Sometimes it's an exclusive, sometimes it's a favourite artist and, at other times, it'll be someone brand new. Here's this week's choice selection. Wye Oak – It Was Not Natural
For their fifth album Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack took turns to fly to each other’s cities for a week, or so, at a time (she’s based in Durham, North Carolina, while he calls Marfa, Texas, home). Hunkering in home studios, to combine songs sketched miles apart, they found their necessarily short sessions were subject to less second-guessing and hesitation. And the result was “an unabashed and unapologetic Wye Oak” which will be heard in full when they release their next album The Louder I Call, The Fast It Runs in April (we’ve previously played the title track). We love this band, as well as Jenn’s Flock Of Dimes solo project, and we’re looking forward to their 6 Music Live Room return on the 4th May.
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – Suspicion
They’re a sibling trio, signed to Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label, and this is the first new music we’ve heard since last year’s Superscope LP. They’ve never sounded more like The Cramps! With some lovely percussion and an extended drum solo.
Let’s Eat Grandma – Falling Into Me
We’re going to call it – Rosa and Jenny, aka Let’s Eat Grandma, are the coolest teenagers ever. For their first new material since 2016’s I Gemini LP, the girls have already collaborated with PC Music’s SOPHIE – and for this, the second taste of material from their impending follow-up I’m All Ears they’ve stayed in a similar musical lane. It’s fun, slightly left-of-centre pop – and we’re big fans of it. If you like the idea of 80s Madonna mixed with some early 00’s Richard X and a sprinkling of Bjork-esque harps, then this will definitely be for you.
Gaz Coombes – Walk The Walk
This is the latest tease of material from Gaz’s impending new album World’s Strongest Man that’s due to drop at the beginning of May. He’s already got a Mercury nomination under his belt for his last solo effort Matador so we’re expecting big things. This one is a smooth, funky mix of infectious bass and gospel choir vocals, making it 2/2 so far when it comes to brilliant tunes from this record.
Daniel Avery – Projector
Fans of atmospheric electronic music rejoice – for Daniel Avery is returning with new music at long last! Indeed, five LONG years after last full-length project with a slice of atmospheric electronic perfection. On creating his new material, Daniel said “I’ve become increasingly interested in those moments in a club when the outside world becomes little more than an inconsequential thought at the back of your head.” ‘Projector’ does just that – it’ll transform you away from your desk, your kitchen or your commute to a mini party in your head. A dancefloor gem to kick-start the weekend if ever there was one!
