Fit & Fearless: Supercharge Your Body

New year, new you? Many people see January as an opportunity to return to a healthy lifestyle after the excesses of Christmas. But for personal trainers Tally, Zanna and Vic – aka Instagram’s #GirlGains crew – the important thing about January is “moderation, not deprivation”.

Tempted to cut carbs? Sack off rest days? Don’t. “We want to talk to you about not going to the extremes, because they’re the easy options”, Tally says. “We want to give you realistic advice for January. Not the faddy stuff, not crashing - realistic stuff.”

Ready to go? Here are Tally, Zanna and Vic’s five top tips. And if you want to hear more like this, you can hear their energetic podcast for 5 live, Fit & Fearless, here.

1. Move More

It doesn’t have to be complicated, just start adding in more steps to your day!

That may be through walking to work, always taking the stairs or getting away from your desk and enjoying a lunchtime walk. We recommend to aim for around 10,000 steps a day.

2. Quality over Quantity

We don’t need to slave away in the gym to get fit and healthy. In reality, a consistent average of 3-4 quality workouts a week - that last no more than 45 minutes to an hour - can help you reach your goals.

3. Make it social

Why not invite a friend to come and try a new gym class with you? Or perhaps instead of meeting up over a coffee and cake, enjoy a walk together instead? By getting friends and family involved, it not only helps keep you accountable but it makes the healthy habits so much easier to incorporate into your lifestyle in the long term.

4. Set Goals

Give your workouts a bit more purpose! Think about your long term goal; perhaps it is running 5K? Then break that down into monthly, weekly and daily goals so you can stay on track for your target.

5. Get Help!

There’s no harm in asking for help if you’re unsure about what is best for you. Perhaps that might be using an app to give you workout guidance, or it might be as far as getting a personal trainer to help you work on your form one-to-one. There are so many resources out there to help - just make sure you are getting all advice (especially online) from professionals in their field.
