1Xtra DJs choose their favourite UKG Anthems

The clubs, the music, the clothes... UKG was a hugely unique scene and led to the Grime scene that dominates pop music today.

As 1Xtra Presents: With A Little Bit Of Luck (airing on Monday 2nd April), it reminded us of the time we asked some of our presenters for their favourite UKG Anthem and their memories of hearing it for the first time...

“This was the tune that had me doing hairbrush karaoke NON-STOP as a kid – I know every single one of Ms Dynamite’s bars!”

DJ Target: Brandy & Monica – The Boy Is Mine (Architechs Remix)

DJ Target chooses his favourite UKG anthem

DJ Target reveals the record that got him into UKG for the first time.

“I actually wasn’t too keen on Garage, I was still coming off the back-end of being a Jungle kid. But then I got played a bunch of tracks including this white label remix - this is the record that got me into Garage for the first time.”

It turns out Twin B is also a big fan!

"That bassline shook up my bedroom. What a tune!"

Twin B chooses his favourite UKG Anthem.

“I remember hearing this Brandy & Monica remix and going mad. That bassline – dum dum dum – dum dum dum – shook up my bedroom. Many a time. What a tune!”

Mistajam: Wookie - Battle (feat. Lain)

"It’s a real anthem for positivity” - Mistajam on Wookie's 'Battle'

Mistajam chooses his favourite UKG Anthem as part of 1Xtra's UKG Weekend.

“Me and a group of friends were in a youth sound system at a youth club, and there was a kind of rival sound system. We were having a little bit of a soundclash and I was struck, hearing it for the first time; that beat, the bassline of the record, and those signature Wookie flourishes. It’s a real anthem for positivity and to think that it was a club banger, we definitely need more of those in the modern day age.”

“I’ve chosen 21 Seconds because it’s got all the elements of a garage classic. It’s the ultimate garage karaoke tune that everyone knows the words to.”
