Two-factor authentication

What is it?

  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an extra layer of security for online accounts like banking or emails.
  • It combines a traditional password with a different device you have access to, such as a mobile phone or tablet.
  • Once set up, when prompted for a password for an online account, you are required to approve access via a second code, fingerprint or facial recognition on a second device.
  • This means if your password is leaked or someone guesses it, the person trying to access your account won’t be able to - unless they also have your device in their possession.

Why is it important?

  • Tech expert David McClelland, speaking on the programme on 6 January 2026, says setting up two-factor authentication is important, since it provides crucial additional protection in the event that one of your devices is stolen and criminals attempt to access your account to commit fraud.

How do I set it up?

Typically there will be an option to set up two-factor authentication in the security settings of your email account or banking app. Some accounts, such as Google or Apple, may cover multiple online services. The option may be labelled as 2FA or two-step authentication.

  • Google: On a computer, log in to your Google account at google.com, by clicking ‘Sign in’. If you are already logged in, this will appear as your icon at the top right of the screen. Once you are logged in, click the ‘Google apps’ icon that looks like nine small dots at the top right. From there, scroll down and select ‘Google Account’. Now, on the left of the screen select ‘Security and sign-in’. This provides an option to change your password and set up 2-step authentication. Find more advice about Google by clicking here.
  • Apple: On a computer, log into your Apple account at account.apple.com. Once logged in, click ‘Account Security’. From here you can add a trusted phone number or device to enable two-factor authentication. You can also set up two-factor authentication in ‘Settings’ on an Apple device. • The process for other services, such as online banking, varies. Check your account’s security settings or the help section of the company’s website for information.
