BBC Fresh Profile: Meghan Young

Film-maker Meghan Young talks about what inspired her documentary short Just.

A youth volunteer programme inspired Meghan Young to make her film Just which explores gender and sexual identity.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

I have always wanted to create work which had a strong message, altered an outlook on life, evoked emotion and provoked thought. I had an opportunity where I could explore a subject close to me, as well as pushing myself through a journey of my own identity. I wanted to share the difficulty as well as break the assumptions surrounding those who identify as LGBTQI . I wanted to do this in a way that did not enforce my own opinions on others, nor loudly exclaim equal rights. But a way that simply told a story, in an attempt to change the way in which we generalise.

What motivated you to make this film?

Earlier this year I took part in the Stonewall Youth Volunteer programme - resulting in meeting some truly inspirational people. All of whom were doing incredible work in raising awareness among the younger generation. Thus I wanted to continue this work through my own method, and share something from a viewpoint not often seen.

What camera did you use to shoot your film?

Nikon D5000

Who/what inspires you?

Simply the people around me, those everyday interactions and conversations - hearing a story, an opinion, a different way of life to my own. It's that continuous learning that happens on a day to basis that inspires me the most, we can learn such a great deal from one another.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue creating films, with aspirations of becoming a successful director.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

I still have a great deal to learn, but I think the most important thing is to simply listen.
