National Open Art competition reveals winners

The winners of the 2015 National Open Art Competition have been announced and among the prizes won by professional artists, emerging and young artists were also celebrated.

A total of 35 amateur and professional and artists from across the UK and Ireland won prizes totalling more than £60,000.

Three fine art prizes were awarded at the Royal College of Art. These were won by British-born Tamil artist Reginald S Aloysius, up-and-coming Bristol Street Artist Jack Tierney and Kent painter Adrienne Blake.

Prizes for the best artworks in each medium were also awarded including the Best Photography award, given to Harry Borden, one of the UK’s most acclaimed portrait photographers, for his C-type print, Kenny – 20 Years of Farming. Aleksandra Karpowicz’s photographic collage of naked people of all shapes and sizes Let’s Talk About Sex won the Best Portrait Award.

This year’s competition also included a moving image category for the first time in its history, won by Susan Walsh for Flair.

A piece of A-level coursework won the public vote in September. Kaye Song’s oil painting Asleep, of a close friend at rest in her bedroom, beat hundreds of artworks by professional and amateur artists to the prize.

The winning artworks beat nearly 4000 entries after being selected anonymously by judges Hughie O' Donoghue RA, David Lister, Rebecca Hossack, Vanessa Branson and Amanda Harman.

The works are all being exhibited at NOA’s Winter Exhibition at the Royal College of Art from 21 October to 1 November along with more than 100 artworks that also made it through to the final.
