Experience a scary legend of Dartmoor through binaural sound
25 March 2021
Hairy Hands FM is a new audio adventure created by Hannah Parsons and Joe Strickland. Using only a mobile device and a pair of headphones, listeners can set out on a treacherous journey and bring a chilling legend to life.

The legend of The Hairy Hands of Dartmoor
Ever since the 1920s, motorists have blamed a ghostly pair of ‘Hairy Hands’ for causing numerous road accidents in Devon. Now a new audio experience allows listeners to experience these spooky happenings themselves.
Featuring an unnerving binaural sound design, the Hairy Hands FM experience gives listeners the chance to interact with a radio talk show host who will help them defeat the mythical monster, in a unique interactive adventure.
The somewhat silly nature of a pair of disembodied ghost hands struck a non-serious tone that we knew would be approachable to a non-horror audience.Hannah Parsons
For artist Joe Strickland, the project is a chance to explore how an interactive format can allow audiences to explore horror in new ways. It's also a chance to experiment with using technology to create a sense of theatre outside a performance venue.
Joe was inspired by The Encounter by Complicité; "I was so fooled by the binaural sound that I realised that, for digitally recreating the feeling of liveness and presence, this was the technology to use".
Hairy Hands FM was showcased at the Southwest Creative Technology Network’s Data Showcase on 26 March 2021. You can watch the event here.

What is binaural sound?
Binaural sound is recorded using two microphones, to recreate the experience of hearing a live event with both ears. It is intended to be heard through headphones.

A New Creatives project
In 2019, BBC Arts and Arts Council England launched New Creatives - a talent development initiative encouraging artists aged 16-30 to push creative boundaries and reflect their experiences of living in Britain today.

Artists were invited to submit proposals for short films, audio and interactive works. The results reflect the breadth of emerging talent in Britain today.
