BBC Fresh Profile: Kirsty Ashton MBE

Kirsty Ashton's film follows the lives of those affected by neurofibromatosis.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

Neurofibromatosis (NF), is a condition, which is not that well known or understood. I hope to make neurofibromatosis (NF) a household name, everyone has heard of cancer, and cystic fibrosis yet not many people will have heard of NF. It is as common as CF and can be very debilitating for the person who suffers from the condition.

I want to raise awareness. NF affects so many people in different ways.

What motivated you to make this film?

I have always had a passion for making documentaries whether they're health based or about arts, and with NF being a subject that’s close to my family's, friend's and my heart.

I understand exactly how people who suffer from this cruel condition suffer every day. If you don't suffer from this condition you cant really say you understand. I do suffer from the condition and I truly do understand.

Who/what inspires you?

I think we all choose our own path in life and must live with the path we chose.

My family and friends inspire me everyday, listening when they are in pain, or when they are too frightened to go out incase they get bullied due to the way they look. Knowing I have helped one person over come an obstacle inspires me to go on and help the next person.

Every person has potential to do whatever he or she desire in life, but some people just need a little more encouragement. Seeing someone smile again after I have helped them inspires me to continue helping others.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to make a one-hour documentary on different subjects, whether it’s looking into arts or health conditions/medical issues in the UK and overseas. Seeing how different countries deal with health issues and what treatment is available.

I intend to carry on telling stories that have been told to me and trying to improve the lives of others who suffer from NF. I have made a start with this by having my first book published two years ago and my second book is out later this year.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

Life is no smooth road for any of us. No matter who you are, we have each chosen our own path in life and must live with that. Some of us take the wrong path and some the right path. Believe in your self and success will follow.

Making others happy is what makes my day and even happier to go forward to the next day.
