BBC Fresh Profile: Amee Fairbank

Amee Fairbank describes what motivated her to make a film about women in the workplace

Amee says she is interested in workplace equality for men and women and believes the economic downturn is helping to bring about changes in how job roles are filled.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

We picked the subject of females doing typical male type trade jobs because the current economic climate has left a lot of young people unsure about their careers and futures. The subject is a brilliant way to inspire young females into roles that are continually needing to be filled, such as electricians and mechanics.

The film also shows that against the odds it is possible to achieve what you want - you just need to push yourself and be motivated to make it happen.

I also wanted to show how things have changed, and are continuing to change, when it comes to equality for men and women. There are still sexist views out there but there are a lot of people who welcome more females taking up these traditionally male-dominated roles.

What motivated you to make this film?

The motivation was a great personal interest in work, job satisfaction and the ambition and drive to achieve in life. I am also personally inspired by people who take risks in business, which two of the contributors did.

What camera did you use to shoot your film?

The film was shot using Canon 5D MK II and a Canon XF305.

Who/what inspires you?

I am inspired by ambitious people who work hard and strive to achieve. I have met many inspirational people throughout my career and life so far. The skills and knowledge they have shared with me motivate me to want to achieve and build my business. I am lucky to have many wonderful people around me who support and encourage me.

What are your plans for the future?

My plan for the future is to build and grow my company, Lizardfish TV, and hopefully gain some broadcast commissions, making content that engages and inspires people, making them stop and reflect on a subject matter that we have covered. I hope to be in a position to take on new staff and be able to nurture their talent and skills.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

The most important thing I have learned is that success and achievement don't get handed to you on a plate. If you want something, you have to go out and get it. Nobody else can do it for you, only you - so believe in yourself and don't give up until you get there.
