Stoke on Trent’s, Fegg Hayes community, like many UK cities has issues that communities must face daily, such as deprivation, holiday hunger, mental health and exclusion.
Thankfully since 2017 the local residents association set to create a grass roots project and has now been granted charitable status, as the Sylvester’s Community Trust. One of the founders, Susan, is a highly respected chairwoman and with her team they strive to tackle these issues through delivering food donation boxes, workshops at the community hub and running of the Fegg Haye’s Young Voices. There is an enormous need, the foodbank is massively oversubscribed and the local school provides over half of its students with free school dinners, so the ‘holiday hunger’ scheme is there to fill the gap.
From these awe inspiring acts of kindness, they developed the idea of converting a dead space of land into a multi-functional area, which offers a sense of relief to its local residents. The ambition is to produce a desperately needed, productive green space that maintains its own viability, using build techniques and on-going systems that allow for continual re-use. To include and encourage community engagement, health related activities (particularly mental health), education, food growing and play / recreational spaces for every one of any age and ability, now and in the future.
Unfortunately, the charity does not have the funds to complete this project, which is where DIY SOS comes in, with their amazing team of volunteers, tradesman and local companies, to help produce an important and much needed sustainable community asset for the people in and around Fegg Hayes.
