Garden 4: The Massachusetts Garden

Designed by Susannah Hunter and Catherine MacDonald

Inspired by their trip to Cape Cod, Susannah Hunter and Catherine MacDonald have designed a garden that is an interpretation of this region of Massachusetts. Inspiration was taken from the natural landscape, particularly the sand dunes and sand-plains associated with the national seashore.

Leather applique panels depicting a coastal scene from Cape Cod and bold sweeps of roses and hydrangeas provide a theatrical backdrop to the garden. A contemporary building within the garden, designed by Scottish architect Julian Hunter, was inspired by the artists’ retreats nestled within sand dunes near Provincetown, Cape Cod.
