The second series of BBC One Daytime's award-winning period drama following the lives of the land girls on the Hoxley estate continues, as they do their bit for the country in the shadow of war.
Bea catches the eye of an Italian prisoner of war, Salvatore. He speaks to her as the girls work in the fields and then starts to sing in Italian and is joined by the other POWs. Connie then leads a gutsy rendition but the camaraderie is broken by the arrival of a messenger boy who heads towards Joyce with news about her husband, John.
The next day, Bea talks to Sal again. But what Bea sees as an innocent friendship causes trouble between her and Billy. Finch insists that Billy should tell Bea his news...
At the Manor House, Ellen reveals to Diana that Jack is here to find his grandchild.
Meanwhile, Esther takes Martin for a second opinion after his accident. She tells Finch that Martin needs an operation which she can't afford. Esther goes to see Vernon to ask him to lend her the tractor money he got from Finch. Vernon declines but makes her another offer, but will Esther accept?
After being arrested for the murder of Lord Hoxley (at the end of the last series), an unkempt but free Tucker is spotted on the streets of Helmstead. He turns up at the village hall where Connie is singing for the troops, accompanied on the piano by Henry Jameson. The music is brought to a halt by Tucker's appearance. He then shocks Lady Hoxley by turning up at her door asking for his old job back.
Back at the village hall, Finch teases Connie that Henry is a ladies man. At the end of the night, Henry's a little worse for wear and kisses Connie. Feeling bashful, Henry hurries off and Connie is lost for words.
Martin goes back to the derelict cottage to take the stranger some food. The stranger reveals that he is a conscientious objector. However, Martin later discovers his true identity...
