BBC Radio 1's Ibiza Weekend

Saturday 7 August on BBC RADIO 1

This summer BBC Radio 1 celebrates 15 years of broadcasts from the White Isle of Ibiza and, from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 August, brings listeners another legendary dance-fuelled weekend packed full of the hottest DJ sets and the best in live music.

This year, some of Radio 1's biggest stars, including Trevor Nelson, Annie Mac, Pete Tong and Judge Jules, broadcast their radio shows live from the dazzling home of dance music.

Starting the weekend in spectacular style, Radio 1 hosts a party at Ibiza Rocks on Friday 6 August with a four-hour live broadcast, where Annie Mac and Pete Tong are joined by a scorching line-up of special guests.

On Saturday 7 August, Radio 1 is set to take Cream @ Privilege by storm with a superb line-up headlined by Underworld. They are joined by Above & Beyond, The Japanese Popstars, Gareth Wyn, Jaguar Skills and the Radio 1 all-star fraternity of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Kissy Sell Out, Kutski, Alex Metric and Jaymo & Andy George.

In 2010 Radio 1 is covering more events than ever before on the White Isle. On Thursday 5 August, the network rocks up at Come Together at Space – one of the freshest nights on the island – recording blistering sets from Grandmaster Flash, Mark Ronson and Zane Lowe.

As the sun goes down, Cocoon gets up and Radio 1 is there on Monday 2 August to record simmering sets from Sven Vath and friends. Pre-recorded music from both of those nights is set to be broadcast over Friday 6 and Saturday 7 August.

BBC Press Information talks to two of Radio 1's DJs, Trevor Nelson and Annie Mac, about the upcoming Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend, the only bad part of which, both agree, is when it ends.

How many times have you been to Ibiza before?

I've lost count! For the last eight years I've been doing a residency at Pacha every summer which takes me out there once a week on Fridays. This summer I'm doing a two-month residency which is my shortest to date.

What's special about the island?

Ibiza has a unique club culture that people from all around the world come to experience and so, musically, it's really challenging and interesting. It's also a really beautiful island – and the sun helps of course!

And what's special about the Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend?

It's the busiest weekend for Ibiza – it's almost impossible to get a flight or hotel because they get booked up as soon as we announce the date. People really want to be there and Radio 1 pulls out all the stops to make it an unbeatable party. You have all the station's best dance DJs there and the crowd is always fantastic.

Do you have a favourite club in Ibiza?

It has to be Pacha – it's a VIP type club that's very glamorous and cool. I'm also doing my first gig at Es Paradis on Sunday and that's a great club too. And you can't beat Café Mambo – the setting is stunning. I do a gig there once a year.

When was the first time you DJed in Ibiza?

It was eight years ago and was with Underwater – a really cool night.

Who's the most exciting person you've met in Ibiza?

I remember the first time I went to Ibiza really well – I met two people pretty much as soon as I arrived and they recognised me. The guy gave me a tour of the entire island and the girl ... well, gave me a massage on a farm! I'll never forget that day – it really sums up the hippy vibe of the island.

Any bad memories of DJing in Ibiza?

Not yet thankfully. Occasionally records have the habit of not arriving, which is annoying, but I still pull it off.

It seems like a really glamorous job to be travelling to Ibiza for Radio 1, are there any downsides?

I'd say the only downside is that pretty much every week my flights are delayed by at least a couple of hours. It's a bit of a drag especially because the airport in Ibiza is really hot and sticky. And the other downside is I'm never there long enough – one night and then I'm back to work the next day.

Annie Mac, BBC Radio 1

BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Mac

Dublin born and bred Annie Mac's BBC Radio 1 show began in July 2004. She is also a talented club DJ and is booked regularly to play the UKs most credible clubs. Her TV work has seen Annie contribute regularly to BBC Two's The Culture show, and present MTV2's Gonzo. In October 2007 Annie helped launch BBC Switch, the BBC's offering for young people aged between 12 and 16. As well as her prestigious Friday night 7-9pm slot, Annie also co-presents Switch with Nick Grimshaw on Sundays from 7-10pm.

How many times have you been to Ibiza before?

I've been to Ibiza around 20 times.

What's special about the island?

It's mostly an unspoilt island with beautiful beaches and gorgeous restaurants, with a real heritage of hedonism; you can go on a relaxing holiday and dip your toe into the hedonism whenever you please.

And what's so special about Radio 1 in Ibiza?

The Radio 1 weekend in ibiza is always the biggest event of the summer, people plan their holidays around it. It's a celebration of all the great music and DJs that come there and all the great clubs and places that host them.

When was the first time you DJed in Ibiza? Any special memories of that?

I have many good memories of the terrace at Amnesia, which was home to my first gig in Ibiza. I had previously imagined it as a little outside area with some tables and fairylights, I had no idea it was a 3,000-strong room that seemed like an aircraft hangar. It was quite a shock and I was terrified throughout. I was thrown in at the deep end for that.

I've also played in Ibiza regularly over the last few years for Cream and had some amazing nights there. I do love Space terrace as well.

Who's the most exciting person you've met in Ibiza?

I've met all sorts of people on the island, last week I had dinner with Armand Van Helden [the American producer, DJ and remixer] and he is one of the most interesting people I've ever met in music.

It seems like a really glamorous job to be travelling to Ibiza for Radio 1, are there any downsides?

Not really... the only downside is if you can't stick around to enjoy the sunshine. I've done a few all-nighters where I am on the decks at 3am and then back at the airport at 8am to fly home. That's always a tough one.
