Bartók

Yuja Wang makes her debut with one of Bartók’s three piano concertos played this seasonYuja Wang makes her debut with one of Bartók’s three piano concertos played this season

All three Bartók piano concertos appear for the first time in the same Proms season, particularly fitting in a year when the BBC Proms is celebrating his great Hungarian compatriot Liszt.

A glittering line-up representing three generations of pianists performs Bartók: Jean-Efflam Bavouzet joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski for the First Concerto (26 July); rising star Yuja Wang makes her Proms debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Andrew Litton for the complex Second (16 August); while distinguished Hungarian pianist András Schiff joins the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder to perform the lyrical Third, written in 1945 just months before the composer's death (21 July).

Christian Tetzlaff performs Bartók's Violin Sonata No. 1 in a Proms Chamber Music concert (5 September) and, on the Last Night, audiences can hear the Miraculous Mandarin Suite (10 September).
