The BBC's own performing groups remain crucial to the Proms: programming so much new and exciting repertoire would be impossible without them. Collectively they are involved in around 30 Proms this season, including the First and Last Nights.

Many of their concerts include major premieres from leading contemporary composers. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales teams up with Emmanuel Pahud to give premieres of flute concertos by Marc-André Dalbavie and Elliott Carter (28 July) as well as the London premiere of Centauromachy by Simon Holt (9 August).

World premieres from the BBC Symphony Orchestra include Graham Fitkin's Cello Concerto for Yo-Yo Ma (31 August) and Kevin Volans's Piano Concerto No. 3 (22 August), plus the UK premiere of Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (7 September). The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra gives the world premiere of Robin Holloway's Fifth Concerto for Orchestra (4 August) and Thomas Larcher's Double Concerto with Viktoria Mullova and Matthew Barley (18 August). The BBC Singers give the UK premiere of Sir John Tavener's Popule meus (3 September) and Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Angel Fighter (20 August).

In an unusual coming-together of two orchestras the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC National Orchestra of Wales join forces for Havergal Brian's mighty The Gothic Symphony (17 July).

Further highlights include the BBC Concert Orchestra performing in the Human Planet Proms under Charles Hazlewood (23 July & 24 July) and the Comedy Prom under Jules Buckley (13 August) – both big BBC Two moments – and Juanjo Mena making his Proms debut as Chief Conductor Designate of the BBC Philharmonic (22 July).
