BBC Radio 1announced today the appointment of SJM Concerts as event producer for the station's flagship live event, Radio 1's Big Weekend.

The Big Weekend is Radio 1's free festival across two days - which, since its creation in 2004, has delivered some of the biggest UK and international artists, including The Foo Fighters, Gwen Stefani, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, The Streets, Black Eyed Peas, Chemical Brothers and many others.

As the event has increased in stature, it was decided to outsource event production and after a rigorous bidding process Radio 1 has appointed SJM to oversee this.

Plans are in place for the 2007 Big Weekend to happen in May with location and line-up to be finalised.

Coverage of the event is now pan-BBC and has included BBC THREE, interactive TV and Top of The Pops, as well as a powerful online presence.

The capacity increased from 10,000 to 15,000 per day this year with plans to grow the event yet more for 2007.
