The Board of Governors has today issued the following statement about the BBC's proposed move to the North of England.

"On June 14th 2006 we authorised the BBC North Project team to treat Salford MediaCity:UK as the lead bidder in principle for the creation of a Media Zone as a site for the BBC's proposed move to the North of England.

"We also asked the Project team to enter into discussions with Salford MediaCity:UK on a limited exclusive basis in order to resolve certain outstanding issues to our satisfaction.

"This period of exclusivity has now expired and BBC management has received a formal response from the Salford MediaCity:UK consortium that addresses all of the outstanding issues.

"After thorough consideration of the outcome of the BBC North Project's discussions we are satisfied that the outstanding issues we raised have been resolved.

"We have now given approval for BBC management to treat the Salford consortium as the preferred bidder and have asked for work to continue to refine the proposal.

"Our final decision will be based on two key factors: whether the move represents value for money for licence fee payers, on which work is continuing; and the affordability of the project, with a final decision not able to be taken until the licence fee settlement is known."
