Middle England News report: The big international companies that Wales has been so successful in attracting have shown very little interest in the Cynon Valley. So, in towns like Aberdare, with the highest unemployment levels in Wales life on benefits or low pay has become the norm. Not surprisingly then, the concerns of Middle England, which all the main parties now seem to concentrate on, seem a very long way from the needs of people here. Tony Thorne: Middle England is phrase which refers to a sort of imaginary typical Englishness. It suggests the kind of, slightly conservative, moderate attitudes of the quiet middle classes - who may not approve of new ideas and new government policies, but who do make up an important section of society. It's interesting that the phrase refers to England, not Britain and I think this is because it's in some ways a reaction to, or opposed to the new idea of a multicultural, multinational Britain, where Scotland and Wales are expressing their own separate identities.
