Gap year Gap year drama: Father: The real question we're discussing is, should Emily go straight to university or should she take a gap year to kind of, you know, open up her mind to different possibilities in life? Mother: Different possibilities in life? I'm not sure I like the sound of that. Tony Thorne: The gap year is an opportunity for young people to get some real life experience and some travel and adventure before they settle down into studying and then working. And they used to get this by going away to university; by going to university in another place and that was a tradition in Britain. But now, for economic reasons, because they have to pay for their education, a lot of young people stay at home and go to the nearest university. So the gap year has become a very important opportunity to leave home for the first time. Prince William: Basically, I just want to enjoy my gap year and hope that goes well and um … so far, thanks to all of you it has gone very well and umm… basically I'm looking forward to going to university next year.
