Niger coup: Ecowas order deployment of standby force to restore constitutional order

Leaders of West African regional bloc Ecowas don order di activation of di Ecowas standby force for possible enforcement of dia resolutions for Niger wia a military coup bin comot President Mohamed Bazoum from power about two weeks ago.

For one communique wey dem read after dia emergency meeting for Abuja Ecowas Leaders say dem reach here after considering di reports of envoys and also carefully deliberating di proposal of Ecowas defense chiefs as well as other submissions by di Ecowas Commission.

Di Regional bloc say e go uphold all im resolutions and dat all options remain open. Dem mandate di Ecowas leadership to continue di monitoring of di sanctions wey dem impose on di junta leaders and warn those wey dey hinder di peace process for Niger to stop am.

Dem also come call on di AU, and di UN to support Ecowas for dia efforts to restore democracy for Niger.

Di Junta earlier in di day form a new goment.

Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine go lead di 21-member goment, wit generals from di new military governing council wey dey head di defence and interior ministries.

Earlier, Nigeria's President and Chairman of di bloc Bola Tinubu, say Ecowas gatz give priority to diplomatic negotiations and dialogue in resolving di political crisis for Niger.

E also note di roadblocks wey di previous envoys wey dem send go mediate wit di military Junta for Niger bin encounter.

"We gatz engage all parties involved, including di coup leaders, in earnest discussions to convince dem to relinquish power and reinstate President Bazoum. Na our duty to exhaust all avenues of engagement to ensure a swift return to constitutional governance for Niger." President Tinubu add.

At di end of di summit Ecowas:

  • Strongly condemn di attempted coup d'etat and di continued illegal detention of President Mohammed Bazoam, im family and members of im goment.
  • Further condemn di condition wey President Bazoum dey detained under and hold di CNSP fully and solely responsible for di safety, security and physical integrity of President Bazoum, members of im family and goment.
  • Uphold all measures and principles agreed upon by di extra ordinary Summit sake of Niger on 30th July 2023.
  • Underscore di determination of di ECOWAS authority to keep all options on di table for di peaceful resolution of di crisis.
  • Enforce all measures in particular border closures and strict travel bans and assets freeze on all persons or groups of individuals wey dia actions dey prevent all peaceful efforts to ensure di smooth and complete restoration of constitutional order.
  • Warn member states wey by dia action directly or indirectly, dey prevent peaceful resolution of di crisis for Niger about di consequences for dia action before di community.
  • Call on di African Union to endorse all di decisions we ECOWAS authority don take on di situation for Niger.
  • Further call on all partner kontris and institutions including di United Nations to support ECOWAS, for dia effort to make sure say dem restore constitutional order sharp sharp, to agree wit dia normative instruments.
  • Direct di President of di Commission to monitor di implementation of di sanctions.
  • Direct di Committee of di chief of defence staff to activate di ECOWAS standby force with all dia elements immediately.
  • Order di deployment of di ECOWAS standby force to restore constitutional order for di Republic of Niger.
  • Underscore dia continued commitment for di restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means. Retention of President Mohamed Bazoum.

Ecowas chairman say Niger don demonstrate great membership and dedication and patriotism.

President Bola Tinubu add say from di communique, pipo go see say dem no give any option including di use of force as di last resort.
