In September 1993 Russia was facing a political crisis. President Boris Yeltsin had responded to criticism of his economic reforms by dissolving parliament. Paul Sims arrived in Moscow on board the Trans-Siberian railway on 2 October, as the rebel deputies and their armed supporters assembled outside the White House.
