It is particularly embarrassing because Mr Blair and his wife, Cherie, have a reputation for being strict parents.

In a statement from Downing Street Euan has apologised for inconveniencing the police, the state he was in and for giving false information.

Mrs Blair has flown home early from a holiday in Portugal with baby Leo and her mother.

Speaking at a conference in Brighton Tony Blair said: "Being a prime minister can be a tough job, but I always think that being a parent is probably tougher."

Mr Blair will also appear on Question Time this evening when he will emphasise that his son should not be treated any differently from other young offenders.

Both of Euan's parents are expected to accompany him when he returns to Charing Cross police station to find out what action is to be taken.

He will receive either a verbal reprimand, a recorded warning or - the least likely outcome - a charge.
