Nottinghamshire's Sports Unsung Hero for 2006 is Mandy Worth. For 17 years she has devoted her life to coaching speed skaters. Mandy can be found doing something for the sport virtually every day of the week. She's a mum and a full time child minder but still finds time to encourage other athletes. | | Mandy Worth |
She coaches in Short Track Speed Skating at the Nottingham Ice Racing Club based at the Nottingham Ice Centre. A top coachShe's the highest qualified volunteer coach in the country and over the years has coached at least 20 skaters to become British champions. Mandy's on the ice most nights but also takes two gym sessions and helps organise travel and competitions all over Europe. She does it at her own expense and time. Giving something back | | The Coach |
She's a former Olympic speed skater who wanted to give something back to the sport. She teaches athletes from five to adult. When it comes to the nomination, Mandy is very modest. "I'm not one who likes to be put at the front. I'd rather be at the back doing the work." Mandy will now represent Nottinghamshire in the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards held on 27 November 2006. If she wins she'll go to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the NEC in Birmingham in early December. |
