Key to the Dales The book, Collins Tamblers Guide to the Yorkshire Dales by David Leather is a 'must have' for just about anyone contemplating a visit to this beautiful part of the county of Yorkshire. Yes, I mean anyone, because it is packed with a potted history of the Yorkshire Dales, well some of them anyway. It's very well researched and written, without being too complicated or long. It gives the reader little snippets of geographical and geological facts of the Dales, the birds and other wildlife found there and historical facts about places. To enjoy this book you don't have to be a rambler. However each of the walks are clearly described and set out, including a map of the walk and there is also a key which denotes how easy or not so easy the walk is, how long and what you will see on the walk. Sadly, due to health problems, my rambling days are over, but I eagerly read this book to check the walks, when I was able to 'ramble in the Dales'. I found myself, to my delight, actually reliving the walks. The book is dotted with some lovely photographs, of places you can see on the walks or may be just visit by car. Commendation I learned many new facts about the areas that I have previously visited. I also found there are some parts of some of the walks that can be accessible to me now. You can be sure when the better weather comes, I shall be found touring the Dales in my old escort car with David Leathers book at my side. It isn't every day that you get a walking book, geography book and history book all rolled into one. So my thanks David for bringing the Dales to life.
