Radio Ryedale

By David Sumner
Radio Ryedale broadcasts local stories across the internet. As David Sumner explains: " it’s not exactly radio or newspapers or magazines or just another slick web-site. It’s a bit of each!"

Radio Ryedale facts

Radio Ryedale uses images, text and sound recordings to broadcast stories over the internet via www.radioryedale.co.uk

If you're interested in becoming a volunteer, email: david@radioryedale.co.uk

Based in Hovingham, Radio Ryedale is a not-for-profit organisation, manned entirely by unpaid volunteers. We use images, text and sound recordings to broadcast stories over the internet via www.radioryedale.co.uk. All our stories have a clear Ryedale connection.

We want to get more people involved in the local community by providing an accessible platform for suggestions, arguments, concerns and talent.

There has been a sad, steady decline in village activities affecting a host of things that were once assumed to be mainstays of local life – churches, the Women’s Institute, cubs and brownies, concerts, clubs and football teams. We don’t see Radio Ryedale as stemming these social changes - just, perhaps, a substitute for some.

We don’t try to compete with the rest of the established media. We don’t have their resources and, quite honestly, we don’t see that as a meaningful objective. Our stories are different in content and style. And we have some advantages. There is no interference from ‘on high’, no politics, no pressure from deadlines, shareholders or audience ratings. So we don’t complain!

During three years of operation we’ve broadcast 2,020 stories. All are readily accessible in our archive, carefully arranged into different subject areas. People can select what they want to hear.

"We don’t try to compete with the rest of the established media."

We are proud of our volunteer training and are pleased it’s helped several to secure full time broadcasting and media jobs. New volunteers are always needed, old or young, experienced or not. Most find it interesting and exciting. If you are interested in joining us, please email: david@radioryedale.co.uk
