Running Drystone Radio

For Jo Newsholme, work is a joy, something to look forward to. And who wouldn't wake up and feel enthused by the prospect of meeting lots of new and interesting people - even if they were naked?!

I’ve always been a bit of a radio geek. I met Drystone Radio Director David Adams at a farming show in the Yorkshire Dales and subsequently hung around doing everything and anything for the station, until he suggested we found funding for me to manage the project full time.

Over the past year I have built up a network of contacts in the area, getting feedback on what people want from their local station. We work very closely with local charities, voluntary organisations, schools and colleges in particular.

"One of the funniest things that ever happened to me was interviewing a nude man - nothing any amount of experience could ever prepare you for!"

I also train our volunteers in everything - from editing and submitting copy for online articles, conducting and recording interviews to editing sound digitally and enjoying ourselves in amongst.

One of the funniest things that ever happened to me was interviewing a nude man in the studio. He was a naturist walking the Pennine Way and gave a very insightful and intriguing interview - but unfortunately for me, stark naked. It took a lot of concentration to look him in the face and focus on what he was saying – nothing any amount of experience could ever prepare you for!

I love my job, especially meeting new people and hearing local bands and new music from the area. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would get paid to interview fascinating people and help set up one of the most exciting new projects to come out of the Yorkshire Dales.

All that remains now is for us to be awarded our Community Radio FM Licence in the new year. Fingers crossed!
