Sugary foods are best taken at end of a meal or a set time each week rather than frequently every day.
Frequent intake of foods and drinks containing sugar between meals causes tooth decay
Consumption of sugary foods should be restricted. Limit the consumption of foods and drinks with added sugar to a maximum of four times a day.
Fizzy drinks including sparkling water and pure fruit juices are acidic and should not be taken too frequently between meals. The healthier options are tap water, bottled still water (unflavoured) and milk.
Many medicines contain sugar. Medicine is often given last thing at night which means sugar is around the teeth during the night. When we sleep we produce less saliva which means teeth are at a greater risk of decay. You can ask for sugar free medicine at the chemist.
Change your toothbrush at least once every three months.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day. It is recommended to brush teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day. Children should be supervised when brushing their teeth especially to remind them to brush the inside and outside of every tooth.
Brush teeth for at least three minutes each time.
Visit the dentist regularly.
