Youth Council for Northern Ireland (YCNI)

Youth Council for Northern Ireland supports the development of youth services in Northern Ireland.

What we do

  • Advise the Department of Education and other bodies on the development of the youth service.
  • Provide core funding and grant funding to regional voluntary youth organisations.
  • Encourage cross-community work by the youth service.
  • Advise on the training of full-time and part-time youth workers.
  • Encourage European and international opportunities for young people and those who work with them.
  • Conduct policy research on youth issues.

Examples of our work

Much of our work is strategic on behalf of youth work services rather than directly with young people. However, through partnership arrangements we do produce publications and resources on behalf of young people, for example:

  • Along with our partners in JEDI (including the five education & library boards and YouthNet - http://www.jedini.com/) we consulted with young people from across Northern Ireland to gather their thoughts on, and feed these into, a government review on what “A Shared Future” in Northern Ireland should look like.
  • Along with Action Mental Health and the Health Promotion Agency we developed the ‘sound mind’ passport to advise young people on mental health and emotional wellbeing issues.
