S.T.E.P. (South Tyrone Empowerment Programme)

S.T.E.P. is a community development and training organisation that has been working in the South Tyrone area since 1997. It aims to promote and develop inclusion of the most marginalised groups and areas in South Tyrone empowering people to participate in the socio-economic life of the area.

What we do

  • Training – we offer inexpensive tutor-led courses in a range of subjects from I.T. to childcare, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) to essential skills. These courses are available at different levels, with or without accreditation, and tailored to suit the needs of the learners.
  • Community Development – we offer advice and mentoring to existing community organisations, as well as delivering or assisting in development projects in local areas e.g. housing projects, women's groups etc.
  • Migrant Workers’ Support Project – we offer training for non-English speakers, employment rights clinics, migrant support centre (advice, referrals, filling in forms etc.), community projects, policy work, interpreter and translation services, and outreach work across N.I.
  • Other Services – we also provide room hire, equipment hire, signposting, consultations, and marketing services.

Examples of our work

  • Over the past year we have delivered over 1,200 courses to individuals through our tutor-led and online training (learndirect) programmes including ESOL training, ECDL, Sage accounts, etc.
  • In partnership with the Chinese Welfare Society and Ballymena Community Ethnic Forum, S.T.E.P. Interpreter Services won the contract to provide interpretation and translation services for the Department of Employment and Learning and the Social Security Agency.
