The Derry City Shadow Council

The Shadow Council aims to represent the views of young people in the Derry City Council area and communicate these views to the Derry City Council. The Shadow Council consists of 39 members drawn from various youth, community, educational, geographic and political interests. Shadow councillors must be aged between 16 and 22 years, and each member serves for a period of two years.

What We Do

  • Meet monthly in the city council chambers to discuss issues of importance to young people.
  • Participate in social outings, teambuilding and leadership activities, and residentials.
  • Receive accredited training.
  • Travel, meet new people and speak out on behalf of young people.

Examples of our Work

  • Research with young people in the Derry City Council area re the age of voting and political education.
  • Prejudice awareness training with schools and youth groups.
  • Raising issues which affect young people in the Derry City Council area.
  • Lobbying Derry City Council.
  • Representation on committees e.g. Community Safety Partnership
  • Representing the youth of the city and issues which affect them.
