The Telegraphists Last Message (Dedicated to Nonie)

by Christopher H.Peake

I can see the ribble of the waves through the yellow of the gorse

And my mind floats o’er the seas to telegraphists using morse.
The snapshot was taken in Wexford on a sunny winter day

Whilst I am viewing it my mind is far away

I am thinking of the telegraphist of The Titanic of course

Whilst looking at the snapshot of the yellow of the gorse.
He sent out his last signals. It was all that he could do

Whilst the passengers were being tended to by members of the crew.

There were some Wexford people on board that mighty ocean liner, Belfast built, designed by Andrews, there was not a vessel finer.
The telegraphist sent his messages, others heard his morse

I imagine I can hear it too as the wind blows through the Wexford gorse.
