(I Trudged Along) Now I'm 40
By Brian Gogarty (11th March 2003)

They say “Life begins at forty,
the best years are ahead”.
But if I live as long again
I’ll probably be dead.

They say men peak at seventeen -
and women thirty-five.
So by the time we’re forty
have we lost our sexual drive?

The thought of it’s not frightening,
but what don’t appeal to me is
in order to chew biscuits,
I must dip them in my tea.

And if my hair should all fall out,
as one day it well might,
should I by a wig to help prevent
reflection of the light?

When my limbs grow weary
and my ears no longer hear
and my tongue has lost the pleasure
of tasting wine and beer.

When my prostate and my bladder
are giving me some grief
and I need to fit a catheter
to gain that small relief

When my eyes grow dark and dim,
And I no longer see,
I’ll remember you and you’ll still be
so beautiful to me
